The NYRRC mandate to assist in management decisions related to fish, wildlife and their habitat, is outlined in Chapter 16 of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Final Agreement (Fish and Wildlife).
The North Yukon Renewable Resource Council also provides local input to manage forest resources, as mandated in Chapter 17 of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Final Agreement (Forest Resources).
We work year-round for the best interest of the public in our area. Our
recent major topics have included:
Porcupine Caribou
There has recently been a Draft Harvest Management Strategy released for
public consultation. We have been involved in the entire process of
developing this strategy and we continue to gather public feedback and
submit comments to the working group. We have assisted the Vuntut Gwitchin
Government Natural Resources Department in attaining completed
questionnaires which were released for the public to answer. We look
forward to the completion of a Final Harvest Management Strategy soon.
We assist the Yukon Governments' Environmental Biologist in collecting
caribou samples to be used in research from the hunters in town.
We continue to work closely with the Vuntut Gwitchin Government Natural
Resources Department to post appropriate conservation and safety reminders
around our community each season.
Salmon
We participate with the weekly teleconference calls every Tuesday to keep
up-to-date on the Chinook, Chum and Coho salmon runs at their repsctive
times in the season.
We provide administrative support to a local mark and recapture project for
Chum Salmon that is conducted by EDI.
We have recently helped with the distribution of Chinook Salmon to the
public who were considered in need due to the shortage of the Chinook run
this year.
Fur-bearing Animals
We continue to support and assist the Vuntut Gwitchin Government Natural
Resources Department with their Spring Traditional Pursuit and Fall
Trappers' Assistance Programs in hopes that people can get out on the land
to trap and practice other traditional lifestyles.
We also have provided administrative duties and traditional knowledge to
International Polar Years' Muskrat Studies that were conducted in Old Crow
and Old Crow Flats for the past two years.
