Alsek RRC - Mandate

Fish and Wildlife

Forest Resources

The ARRC mandate to assist in management decisions related to fish, wildlife and their habitat, is outlined in Chapter 16 of the Champagne Aishihik First Nation Final Agreement

The ARRC is a partner in carrying out several management plans for fish and wildlife in the Champagne Aishihik Traditional Territory (CATT) including:

The CATT Integrated Fish & Wildlife Management Plan is one of the biggest projects this Council has ever taken on. Work is beginning to develop a plan to address community concerns about all fish, wildlife and habitat in this traditional territory. Please contact us for meeting dates and to provide your comments.

The ARRC participated in consultations for the Draft Yukon Elk Management Strategy in 2007

The Alsek Moose Management Plan was completed in 1996 to address declining moose populations. It is now expiring and will be incorporated into the CATT Integrated Plan.

The Aishihik Integrated Wildlife Management Plan was completed in 2000 to deal with many concerns especially around moose, caribou and wolves in the Aishihik region. This plan is also expiring and will be incorporated into the larger CATT Integrated Plan.

A draft Dezadeash Lake Management Plan was completed in 2002 to address local concerns about fish populations in the lake. The Council continues to work with Government of Yukon and Champagne and Aishihik First Nations to finalize this plan and to carry out the projects identified as priorities.

The ARRC assists with the Yukon Bison Management Plan which deals with a herd of more than 500 bison introduced into the Aishihik region.

Please contact us for copies of any of the above plans and with any questions or comments you have on fish, wildlife and their habitat in the CATT.

The Alsek Renewable Resource Council also provides local input to manage forest resources, as mandated in Chapter 17 of the Champagne Aishihik First Nation Final Agreement (Forest Resources).

The ARRC helped the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) and the Yukon Government (YTG) create a draft Strategic Forest Management Plan (2005) for the Champagne and Aishihik Traditional Territory (CATT).

In conjunction with the guiding principles of the Strategic Forest Management Plan, a newly developed Integrated Landscape Plan for the Champagne and Aishihik Traditional Territory (2007) provides management priorities and guidelines for timber harvest project planning for the CATT.

Future ARRC work on forestry will include:  Spruce beetle research and planning, local harvest planning and fire management planning. The ARRC welcomes your input, please send your questions and comments to admin@alsekrrc.ca.
