Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board, Renewable Resource Councils and The Yukon Salmon Sub-Committee, present:

The future of Yukon’s Fish & Wildlife is up to you!
What’s your vision for the year 2020?

As part of its mandate "to act in the public interest" for the benefit of Yukon fish and wildlife and their habitat, the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board (YFWMB), in partnership with the RRC’s and the Yukon Salmon Sub Committee, wish to provide long range strategic advice and recommendations to the responsible governments (Yukon Government, First Nations and Canada) on the management of Yukon’s fish and wildlife resources. From our perspective the single most important aspect of this is to learn what Yukon residents think about the current state of these resources and what their vision is for the future.

Therefore over a three month period, from November 2008 to January 2009, we engaged with Yukoners from all cultures and all walks of life, young & old, male & female to hear the opinions and views of the Yukon people.

We met with any agency, association or other such group to provide information and to hear your views. We also mase a series of presentations in Yukon schools to hear the views of our youth.

There were a number of ways for the Yukon public to provide input: through this webpage, via telephone, mail or email or at a three-day Symposium which we will hosted at the Yukon Inn from November 26th to 28th, 2008.

We accepted input in any form from any individual Yukoner or any organized group of Yukoners.

We provided a Yukon Fish & Wildlife Public Discussion Document in November 2008 to inform Yukoners of the current state of our fish & wildlife resources and how they are being managed and, in addition, we distributed a list of questions designed to prompt Yukon people to think about:

* Where are we with fish and wildlife management in the Yukon?
* Where are we heading?
* Where do we want to go?
* How do we get there?
* What is your vision for the year 2020?

We proposed that nothing be sacred during our presentations, discussions or your feedback and that all aspects and issues related to the future of our fish and wildlife would be on the table without prejudice or bias. Discussions included, but were not limited to, the use of fish and wildlife such as:

* Recreational hunting and fishing
* Wildlife viewing
* Subsistence hunting and fishing
* Small game hunting
* Upland and migratory bird hunting
* Commercial use of fish and wildlife: game farming, salmon fishing, trapping and big game outfitting
* Non resident hunting and fishing
* Local preference
* Captive wildlife
* Transplanted species
* Rare and endangered species
* Wildlife disease
* Habitat issues such as access, development, and protected areas.

At the conclusion of the three month feedback period, Datapath analysed all of the responses received, and prepared a report (Yukon Fish & Wildlife: A 20:20 Vision -- Comment Analysis: Final Report; April 2009).  Based on these results, it is our intention to create a Comprehensive Yukon Fish & Wildlife Strategic Plan complete with a vision for the year 2020, that will hopefully guide the governments managing fish and wildlife in the Yukon.
